Frequently Asked Questions
What is EKKO?+
EKKO is a savings game for New Zealand, coming soon - compete with friends, hit a weekly savings target every Friday (Judgment Day), and win the prize pool. What's live today is 21 free tools across finance, health, career, and whānau that anyone can use right now without signing up.
Is EKKO free to use?+
All the free tools are completely free, forever. No sign-up, no email, no payment card required. The savings game (Gold tier) will have a weekly subscription fee once it opens, but the tools are always free.
How does Judgment Day work?+
Every Friday at 5:30pm NZT your Arena account balance is checked against the total you need to reach. If your balance meets or beats it, you survive. If not, a lifeline is consumed. You have three lifelines per game. Lose all three and you're eliminated.
How is the total I need to reach worked out?+
It is the running total of every weekly target since your game started. It never goes down, even if you miss a week. Each week it climbs by that week's target. This is the number your Arena balance has to reach or beat to survive Judgment Day.
How is my weekly target calculated?+
It depends on the difficulty you choose when you join - Beginner, Standard, Hard, or Extreme. Harder difficulties start higher and climb faster. It climbs a little further every week until it hits a ceiling, then eases back and climbs again, gradually getting harder the longer the game runs. Check-ins do not affect your target in any way. What you have left is worked out from your own transaction data once your bank is connected, EKKO does the maths so you don't have to.
Is my bank data secure?+
Yes. EKKO connects through Akahu, a New Zealand open banking company, using Enduring Connectivity (a read-only connection type) — EKKO's own formal accreditation path is still being finalised. You authenticate directly with your bank through Akahu's interface — EKKO never sees your bank login credentials. Your Akahu token is encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM and is never logged or exposed to client code.
Does EKKO hold my money?+
No. EKKO is non-custodial. Your money never moves into an EKKO account. Your Arena and Stash are your own bank accounts that you designate. EKKO reads the balance — it does not touch the funds.
What happens to the prize pool if I win?+
EKKO never retains any portion of the prize pool under any outcome. The full pool is distributed to winners. The exact distribution formula is detailed in the Game Rules.
Can I delete my account?+
Yes. You can close your account at any time from the Account settings page. Personal information is removed within 30 days. Game history is retained for 7 years for dispute resolution as required by law.
What if Judgment Day is delayed by a technical issue?+
If Akahu is unavailable at 5:30pm NZT, EKKO retries every 30 minutes for up to 4 hours. If it's still unavailable after that, the week is skipped — the total you need to reach still advances, but no lifelines are consumed. All affected players are notified.
I think a Judgment Day result was wrong+
Email chow@ekko.nz with subject “Judgment Day dispute” as soon as you notice, and include your username and the week number. This gets you a direct, faster review than a general support email.
How do I cancel my Gold subscription?+
You can cancel at any time from the Billing page inside the app. Your subscription remains active until the end of the current billing period.
